London Gallery Exhibition
The art of painter/ Academy Award winning songwriter
ROBERT SHERMAN is on view at a solo gallery exhibition in London
at Thompsons Gallery, April 15 to 20, 2002. Robert Sherman,
who has been painting for more than fifty years, is also world famous
as the creator of some of the best-loved family oriented music,
including CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG, Disney's MARY POPPINS, WINNIE
THE POOH and JUNGLE BOOK. The Sherman Brothers have also earned
9 Academy Award nominations, 2 Grammy Awards, and 23 gold and platinum
albums.
Robert Sherman’s art exhibition takes place the same
week as the London Palladium premiere of CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG,
the new musical featuring classic songs by the Sherman Brothers
plus new songs they wrote especially for the stage production.
Robert Sherman appears in person at the Thompsons
Gallery exhibition. Visitors can meet the artist, and view a variety
of his work created throughout the past three decades. Included
are whimsical subjects such as "Fine Four Fendered
Friend", a new painting and fine art limited edition inspired
by the magical motorcar Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and "Carousel
in the Country", which was inspired by Mary Poppins' carousel
horse. Other paintings include a "Self Portrait"
and colorful still life and landscape subjects.
Thompsons Gallery is located at 76 Marylebone High
Street, London W1U 5JU, a short walk from the Palladium. The Robert
Sherman art exhibition is open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, April 15
through Saturday, April 20.
Also, immediately following the opening night stage
performance of "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" on Tuesday, April 16, a
special "after theatre" reception will take place at Thompsons Gallery
from 9:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. A second "after theatre" reception
will be held at Thompsons Gallery on Saturday, April 20, from 9:30
p.m. to 11 p.m. Both nights are open to the public.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
New Musical on Stage at London Palladium
CHITTY
CHITTY BANG BANG the new stage musical debuts in London at the
Palladium Theatre April 16, 2002 with music by the legendary Sherman
Brothers.
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is expected to be
the West End’s most expensive show ever, with estimated costs exceeding
£5 million. The production is being called the ultimate High-Flying
Stage Musical.
The magical adventures of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
are brought to life with sensational sets, stunning special effects
and the wonderful songs of the Sherman Brothers. Musical numbers
include Sherman Brothers classics, such as Truly Scrumptious, Toot
Sweets, Hushabye Mountain and the Oscar-nominated title song Chitty
Chitty Bang Bang, plus new songs created by the Sherman Brothers
especially for this theatrical event.
Ian Fleming, also the author of the James Bond novels,
wrote the children’s book Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. In 1968
the motion picture was produced by Albert R. "Cubby" Broccoli, famous
for bringing the James Bond novels to the screen. Cubby asked Robert
and Richard Sherman, who a few years earlier had won two academy
awards for their music in Disney’s "Mary Poppins", to write the
songs for Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. The film’s team also included
other "Poppins" alumni, including Dick Van Dyke and musical director
Irwin Kostal.
The new stage musical stars Michael Ball, UK’s number
one musical star, and Emma Williams who is making her West End theatre
debut.
